This past Tuesday marked the first of an ongoing series of technology oriented events happening in Amman. The staggering success of the first Amman Tech Tuesdays (AmmanTT) gathering attracted more than 300 local attendees and over 450 online viewers from around the world. Held at the Princess Sumaya University for Technology, AmmanTT ‘s main message is to bring Jordan’s bustling tech community together on the first Tuesday of every month in hopes of fortifying ties and promoting invention at the local level in a more frequent and casual setting.

Initiated by Fouad Jeryes, a local business technologist and entrepreneur, and carried forth in collaboration with some active members of the community, AmmanTT is an organic platform that engages engineers, business people, students, entrepreneurs, project owners, investors, technologists and tech enthusiasts in an open and seamless exchange of information as the sole driver of innovation. The program is prudently structured to accommodate the local tech scene and uphold momentum as different groups (determined by tech specialty) will adopt the platform to create and manage their very own AmmanTT event focused around their interests, developments and contributions to the rest of the population. The next event will be owned by the Open Source Association and will take place on Tues. 1st of June, 2010.

The first assembly clearly interweaved bonds as it hosted globally prominent figures, alongside up and coming members of the community. Dr. Usama Fayyad (Exec. Chairman, d1g.com, Ex. Chief Data Officer & EVP –Yahoo! Inc.) delivered an eye-opening talk around Arabic content over the internet and addressed an array of facts and challenges we need to overcome. Omar Al –Taweel, a local lawyer, gave a talk that catered to those looking to incorporate their tech ideas properly in Jordan while touching on relevant legal developments such as cyber-crime laws and others. Ibrahim Manaa’, a co-founder of Wheels-Express.com, summed up the issues of e-commerce in the Arab world and effectively used the audience to source out reasonable solutions to the problem.

“Our eco-system here in Jordan is very special and we are already positioning ourselves to become the world’s next tech hub – we are significant and world class.” said Jeryes in his opening remarks. In many ways, Jordan is at the forefront of the Arabian technology scene and has now attracted some of the largest players and professionals to the region. Programs like AmmanTT will continue to play a colossal role in bridging the gap between such parties and the new, eager generation of tech ideas and businesses.
