Al Jazeera Sport acquires Egyptian Premier League broadcasting rights

Qatar- based sports network Al Jazeera Sport has reportedly acquired the broadcasting rights to the Egyptian Premier League for US$2.6 million. This will make Al Jazeera Sport the first international TV network to broadcast Egyptian Premiere League games. "We have reached an agreement with Al Jazeera that will enable it to broadcast the Egyptian League this season. They will begin airing the competition's matches in the next round until the end," said Samir Zaher, chairman of the Egyptian Football Association.

Viewers of Manchester United matches account for more than half of the entire English Premier League TV audience

Two du competition winners travel to watch Manchester United at Old Trafford

The Peninsula reports that the Al Jazeera Media Network will be soon launching a dedicated sports news channel, which will cover major international tournaments and sports events. The launch of the sports news channel will coincide with the 15th anniversary of Al Jazeera. The channel will feature a variety morning show and a daily talk show that will include in-depth discussions.

Rapid TV News reports that clips from this week’s AFC Champions League semi finals will be available to watch on YouTube. The semi-finals will feature matches between football clubs from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Korea, and will also highlight the best moments from the quarter final matches and future clashes.

Update: FC Barcelona and Qatar Foundation sponsorship deal continues

It has been previously reported that the board of European champions FC Barcelona were in talks to vote on scrapping the club's $225m sponsorship deal with Qatar Foundation following a five-and-a-half year shirt sponsorship deal in December, which relegated its UNICEF logo to the back of the shirt. The voting resulted in continuing the deal where 697 members voted in favor of keeping it, while only 76 voted for scrapping it and 36 abstained. 
 
 
Club president Sandro Rosell had argued that the Qatar deal was vital for the club as it looks to balance the books.
 
The deal includes a clause which would allow Barcelona to opt out after three years.

According to ArabianBusiness.com, the board of European champions FC Barcelona will be voting on whether to scrap the club's $225m sponsorship deal with Qatar Foundation following a five-and-a-half year shirt sponsorship deal in December which relegated its UNICEF logo to the back of the shirt.
 
The club's decision to collect money for the first time in its history, to display a logo on its jerseys, has prompted thousands of fans to sign a petition calling for the deal to be scrapped.
 
The fans' opposition has pressured Barcelona's board to re-think the deal.

Abu Dhabi Media announces job cuts in broadcast division

The National has reported that Abu Dhabi Media (ADM) plans to cut jobs in the broadcast division, and warned of similar cutbacks in other departments. Abu Dhabi Media claims it conducted a "strategic review" of the department, which operates several television stations including the Abu Dhabi Drama Channel.
 
The company did not specify the number of staff that would be affected, but it is believed to be about 100. Decisions will be extended to other divisions, including publishing and digital media operations.
