DIFF to honour Indian music composer AR Rahman

Dubai International Film Festival is set to honour Indian composer AR Rahman with its Lifetime Achievement Award. At 45, Rahman will be the youngest recipient of this prestigious award. Rahman is the winner of two Grammy Awards as well as two Academy Awards. His work for Slumdog Millionaire won two Academy Awards for Best Original Music Score and Best Original Song.

Rahman was named one of the world’s most influential people by Time Magazine in 2009. “AR Rahman is an inspiration for countless musicians and composers, and has brought a fresh infusion of talent to the Indian film industry" said Festival chairman Abdulhamid Juma.

Dubai International Film Festival announces "MI4- Ghost Protocol" as opening film

'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' is set to premiere in Dubai at the city's international film festival. MI4 will be the first film screened at the event. The film's cast includes Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton. The movie is sure to be a hit in the Emirates, as one of the movie's action sequences was filmed at Dubai's Burj Khalifa tower.

DIFF to take on distribution deal with Picturehouse

The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) has partnered with Picturehouse, a dedicated art house theatre which recently opened in Dubai’s Reel Cinemas, to bring in more Arabic films to the UAE’s box offices, The National has reported. DIFF will bring to the big screen over the next year, between six and eight films that have been part of the film festival but have not been picked up by commercial distributors.

According to the ‘Focus 2009: World Film Market Trends’ report, the UAE is the region’s second-largest film market, with 200 cinema screens and gross box office receipts of $74m in 2008.
