234 million Americans are using mobile devices

According to a study by comscore, a total of 234 million Americans use mobile devices. The study found Samsung to be the top handset manufacturer with 25.5% marketshare. LG comes in second with 20.6% marketshare, followed by Motorola with a 13.6% share. Meanwhile Apple accounted for a 10.8% share of mobile subscribers, while RIM was found to have a 6.6% share of the market.

The study further observed trends in the smartphone market, finding that Apple’s iPhone makes up for 28.1% of the market, and is used by one in ten mobile subscribers.

Google Inc. will acquire Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc. for an agreed $40.00 per share in cash, or a total of about $12.5 billion. While Motorola Mobility is a dedicated Android partner, the acquisition will supercharge the Android ecosystem and will enhance competition in mobile computing.

The acquired share is a premium of 63% to the closing price of Motorola Mobility shares on Friday, August 12, 2011. The transaction was unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies. Motorola Mobility will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. Google will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business.
