OSN has announced it will add up to five high-definition channels this year as part of its plan to make the network 'HD-only' by 2015. "We will continue to expand over the next two or three years, to convert the entire platform offering to HD," said David Butorac, chief executive at OSN. Last week, the pay-TV network announced it had added MBC's seven high-definition channels, including MBC1 and the Al Arabiya news station.

Seven high definition channels from MBC have been added to the OSN line-up. MBC 1 HD, MBC Drama, MBC 2 HD, MBC Action HD, MBC Max HD, MBC 4 HD and Al Arabiya news channel will now be available to OSN subscribers across the Middle East and North Africa for no extra charge. "OSN now offers its customers the most comprehensive HD experience in the region and we're delighted to announce the addition of the MBC HD channels to the OSN platform," said David Butorac, chief executive, OSN.

An OSN pay-TV subscriber who helped millions of people illegally download OSN content has confessed to internet piracy. OSN says it has identified 802 counts of piracy violation, and damages for the man's crime have reportedly reached US $962,400. The man confessed to internet piracy following questioning by Abu Dhabi police earlier in the week. "Following questioning by the authorities, the internet pirate made a full confession and agreed to a settlement to avoid any further legal action leading to imprisonment," an OSN represenatative said in a statement. "The undisclosed settlement amount serves as a deterrent warning to other offenders who are involved in illegal downloading."

OSN, the regional pay-television platform in the Middle East and Africa, has appointed Hill & Knowlton as its retained public relations agency for the Middle East following a competitive regional pitch.

Du telecom company is seeking reimbursement for licensing fees after the company discovered it had been paying unnecessary fees after overestimating the amount of customers it had. Du charges subscribers up to US$86 a month for TV packages, and pays a proportion of these fees to operators and networks like OSN and Al Jazeera for the right to carry their channels. The telecommunications company is now seeking compensation for the unnecessary licensing fees it had paid to its media partners as a result of overestimating the amount of subscribers it had.

According to David Butorac, chief executive of OSN, the television operator will grow its subscriber base by 34% this year, following recent piracy restrictions. "In 2011, the subscriber base of OSN will increase by 34 per cent," said Butorac. Butorac said OSN had noticed a rise in customers and a reduction in subscription cancellations since OSN launched an anti-piracy campaign last year. Signal piracy has cost the Middle Eastern pay- TV market an estimated $500m a year.

OSN is to launch a new 'over the top' (OTT) video platform, which will provide subscribers in the Middle East and North Africa with live content and video-on-demand with their original OSN services. The over the top (OTT) video platform will be developed by KIT digital, a Prague-based company.
