UAE plans to build Internet exchange point

The UAE plans to build an Internet hub that could speed up web connections throughout the Middle East. Much of the region's internet traffic is routed via Europe, the US and Asia. This rerouting takes "a fraction of a second, but it makes a big difference", Mohamed Al Ghanim, the director general of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, said on Tuesday.

The proposed Internet exchange point would improve downloading speeds locally and regionally. The regional exchange in the UAE. Mr Al Ghanim confirmed that the exchange point is in the final stages of planning, and should launch by next year.

UAE telecom rates may be reduced

According to the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), the UAE could begin cutting telecommunication rates by the end of this year. The TRA, which oversees the communication sector in the UAE, said it has presented rate cut proposals to the two telecom operators, Etisalat and du.

“After nearly three years of work on the price and competitiveness issue, TRA made recommendations which are being considered by the operators,” said TRA director general Mohammed Al Ghanim  “We expect such recommendations to be enforced by the end of this year,” he added.

However, the TRA does not intend on granting licenses to new telecom operators. Ghanim said the UAE’s telecom market would remain confined to the present operators for the next few years.

Etisalat files complaint against du with TRA over 4G service claims

According to Business 24|7, Etisalat has filed a complaint with Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) following a statement from du that claims it was the first and sole operator in the UAE to offer the 4G phone network. Ali Al Ahmad, Chief Executive, Etisalat, said: "The HSBA+ service which was launched by du in March is not fourth-generation service rather 3.75G, according to standards set by TRA in the UAE."
 
The TRA, meanwhile, has confirmed "it did not give du the approval to launch the fourth generation services in the UAE, and that du had not yet applied for the license to provide such services in the UAE".

TRA signs MOU with Sharjah Media Corporation

The Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) represented by the National Computer Emergency Team (aeCERT) – a TRA initiative – signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Sharjah Media Corporation (SMC).

 

The MoU states that the aeCERT will provide SMC with its services and expertise in the field of cyber security, and secure the telecommunications and Information of this esteemed Media organization.
Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, TRA Director General and Dr. Khalid Al Midfa, Director of Sharjah TV, signed the MoU at a ceremony held at SMC Headquarters, and attended by a number of officials from both sides.

TRA calls for increased use of social media sites

According to Gulf News, telecom regulators in the UAE are singing the praises of social media to be developed and encouraged as critical tools for community building and open dialogue in the country.  Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) said yesterday it is advocating social media sites for the betterment of the UAE’s social and business community.

“Social media can be defined as an established and evolving channel that needs to be part of overall communications and cap-acity-building strategies,” said Mohammad Nasser Al Ganem, TRA Director-General. “

Facebook in talks with Skype to offer video calling service

Facebook is in talks with Skype Technologies to bring ‘video calling’ to its social network, according to Emirates 24|7 reports. This will give Internet users in the UAE a way around the current Skype ban in the country. This kind of cooperation will ramp up competition with Apple Inc., which introduced the feature on its iPhone in June, and with Google Inc. in August. According to the source, video calling between friends on Facebook was first discussed by the two companies last year.
