The UAE plans to build an Internet hub that could speed up web connections throughout the Middle East. Much of the region's internet traffic is routed via Europe, the US and Asia. This rerouting takes "a fraction of a second, but it makes a big difference", Mohamed Al Ghanim, the director general of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, said on Tuesday.

According to the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), the UAE could begin cutting telecommunication rates by the end of this year. The TRA, which oversees the communication sector in the UAE, said it has presented rate cut proposals to the two telecom operators, Etisalat and du.
“After nearly three years of work on the price and competitiveness issue, TRA made recommendations which are being considered by the operators,” said TRA director general Mohammed Al Ghanim “We expect such recommendations to be enforced by the end of this year,” he added.


The Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) represented by the National Computer Emergency Team (aeCERT) – a TRA initiative – signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Sharjah Media Corporation (SMC).
The MoU states that the aeCERT will provide SMC with its services and expertise in the field of cyber security, and secure the telecommunications and Information of this esteemed Media organization.
Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, TRA Director General and Dr. Khalid Al Midfa, Director of Sharjah TV, signed the MoU at a ceremony held at SMC Headquarters, and attended by a number of officials from both sides.

According to Gulf News, telecom regulators in the UAE are singing the praises of social media to be developed and encouraged as critical tools for community building and open dialogue in the country. Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) said yesterday it is advocating social media sites for the betterment of the UAE’s social and business community.
“Social media can be defined as an established and evolving channel that needs to be part of overall communications and cap-acity-building strategies,” said Mohammad Nasser Al Ganem, TRA Director-General. “
