PressPass launches platform that helps people find the right journalists

Every now and then, people need help in getting their message out to the public. Be it a non-profit that’s raising awareness for their cause, a local business launching a new product or service or a citizen with a newsworthy photo.

Aimed at making it easier for small businesses, non-profits, start-ups and citizen reporters to get their news-worthy stories out to targeted reporters, PressPass launches beta version of its live open directory of journalists and media professionals from across the globe.

Organized by the outlets they work for, the beats they cover, and regions they’re from, PressPass aids these people in quickly finding the journalists who are relevant to their story. The platform is starting with over 7600 journalists from 240 media organizations.

PressPass tracks what the journalists are sharing online, what they're reading, where they rank in comparison to their peers, the topics they care about and who’s getting their attention. This information enables the user to get a more in-depth understanding of the reporter, ensuring that they’re sending their content to the right people.

The website also helps users to get in touch directly with the journalist, by letting them reach out via Twitter. Since journalists are often on tight deadlines, this helps skip long emails and start the immediate conversation.

At the time of launch, PressPass is tracking an average of 75,000 tweets a day, with each tweet continuing to build and refresh each journalist’s profiles.

PressPass’ founder David Haddad says “Our goal is to help strengthen the process of people submitting information to trusted sources in mainstream and local media, and contribute to news organizations in receiving original content from the public.”

Publicis Groupe acquires Flip Media, a leading Middle Eastern digital agency

Publicis Groupe has announced its acquisition of Flip Media, a leading digital agency in the Middle East. The agency will be folded into Leo Burnett Worldwide, and will retain its name. Founded in 2003 and headquartered in Dubai, Flip Media has more than 100 employees across the Middle East and India and has worked with some of the region's most well-known brands. The agency provides end-to-end digital solutions, including strategy, design and production, content and delivery, and technology across all platforms.

“Flip Media is a strategic and cultural fit for our company, and we believe its service offering of digital strategy, design, production and content delivery will be a perfect complement to the incredibly strong digital presence we have built across the region,” said Tom Bernardin, CEO of Leo Burnett Worldwide.

'7DAYS' to expand with new websites

7DAYS, a Dubai-based free newspaper, has announced plans to launch websites catering to other Middle East markets. "We're going to launch a separate website for Abu Dhabi, called 7DAYS in Abu Dhabi. That will be at the end of February, beginning of March," said Mark Rix, the chief executive of 7DAYS. "Three to four months after that, we will then launch a site in Riyadh and in Cairo, and by then we'll have a site in Qatar.

With the launch of several new websites, 7DAYS aimes to increase its revenue. Rix said digital media currently accounted for less than 5% of the newspaper's revenue."Within five years, it should be anywhere between 15% and 20% of our total earnings."

News Corp buys stake In Dubai-based Moby Group

News Corp and Moby Group have signed an agreement under which News Corp is to become a minority investor in the Dubai-headquartered media firm. According to the terms of the deal, News Corp will contribute its 50% shareholding in Broadcast Middle East (BME) for a minority shareholding in Moby. It will also provide growth capital to Moby for its expansion plans.

The agreement "will enable Moby to strengthen its leadership position across the regions in which it currently operates whilst working to expand its presence in new and emerging markets," the companies said in a joint statement.

Alarab news channel will be based in Bahrain

Alarab, a television news station being launched by Saudi Arabian prince Alwaleed bin Talal, will be based in Bahrain. It was previously announced that the station would be based in either Bahrain or Dubai. Sheikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, president of Bahrain's Information Affairs Authority confirmed that "the IAA reached an agreement on December 12 to launch Alarab news channel from Manama".

Alarab is set to launch in December 2012. The station is being launched in conjunction with Bloomberg News, which will support the channel's business news broadcasting.
